Free HFMA bitesize courses for NHS staff

The HFMA have worked in partnership with NHS England to provide a number of HFMA bitesize online courses free of charge to all NHS staff. You can access these courses for free through different platforms:

Electronic Staff Record System (ESR)
To access the HFMA bitesize free courses through the NHS Electronic Staff Record (ESR) please log in to the ESR and go to 'my learning'. You can then search for either the course title or the keyword 'hfma'.

Health Education England (HEE)
If you do not have access to the Electronic Staff Record System (ESR) you can access the free bitesize courses through the Health Education England elearning for healthcare (elfh) platform*. Once you have created an account, just search for the free courses using the keyword 'hfma'

* Anyone with an NHS, MoD, gov.uk or university email address can access the elearning for healthcare (elfh) platform. Care homes and hospices also have access.

What are bitesize courses?

HFMA bitesize provides a range online CPD accredited courses, covering essential healthcare business and finance subjects. Courses vary in length:


Short courses provide 3 hours CPD at an introductory level.


Intermediate and advanced courses provide 6 and 10 hours CPD respectively and allow you to deepen your understanding of a subject, with the opportunity to gain a qualification.

Which HFMA bitesize courses are free to NHS staff?

All of the courses listed below are currently available for free to all NHS staff, through the ESR system. Click on the courses below to view full course details. 

To access the free courses through the ESR system, log in to the ESR and search for the course title you wish to access, from the list below.

Short courses - 3 hours CPD per course

Intermediate courses - 6 hours CPD per course

    Primary care

    Primary care staff can access the HFMA bitesize free courses through the Health Education England elearning for healthcare (elfh) platform. You just need to have an NHS email account.
