The West Midlands Branch are running an event on 16 March 2023 on workforce efficiency.

Target audience: Senior finance leaders
Time: 9:30 - 12:30
This is a free event

The NHS has experienced a significant reduction in productivity since before the COVID-19 pandemic with a significant increase in workforce costs (8% more doctors and 8% more nurses compared to 3 years ago) coupled with a 15% reduction in activity delivered.

Recruitment and retention across the NHS continue to be challenging and therefore improving workforce productivity and efficiency through optimising the utilisation of the existing workforce is a national priority and will continue to be so for at least the next 5 years, with public spending budgets expected to be reduced further over this period.

The recently published NHS draft operational planning guidance for 2023/24 outlines this as the top priority to ‘restore core services and recover productivity’ with a focus on effective workforce planning.

This half day workshop is designed to support finance leaders across systems and organisations to drive improvements in workforce efficiency and reduce reliance on temporary staffing.  We aim, as part of this session, to quantify the potential scale of the workforce efficiency opportunity specific to your region and the organisations within (data will be anonymised but we will happily share the methodology and quantification of opportunity specific to each individual ICB/organisation for them to review after the event).

This half-day session, targeted at senior finance leaders, will aim to cover:

Part 1:

    • National workforce context and priorities;
    • Workforce challenges and drivers;
    • National controls and toolkits;
    • Effective workforce reporting

Part 2:

    • Regional context and priorities;
    • Outline indication of workforce productivity opportunity specific to the region and organisations within;
    • Workforce solutions and support to deliver workforce improvement programme and optimising the use of existing staff;
    • Workforce planning.
