Briefing / Beffective w/ Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust | Achieving transformational change through Clinical Engagement

Engaging clinicians is critical to achieving change in performance, clinicians are so often the decision makers and the conduit that brings a team and directorate together and focuses the activity. We would highlight 4 areas where we have achieved clinical engagement that has resulted in transformational and sustainable change. The poster will detail how we supported clinicians in one hospital to make significant changes including transformational levels of change in flow through the hospital resulting in the ability to safely close 3 wards resulting in a 9 million pound cost saving to the Trust and no negative impact on patient care.

We will also detail how a clinician who through partnership working was able to broker beds from critical care to allow spinal surgery to begin their procedures first thing in the morning safe in the knowledge a bed will be available for their patient on completion. This problem has hindered spinal surgery and the running of the surgical directorate for many years but in several hours it was sorted by engaging clinicians.

Thirdly we will focus on how a team of surgeons who have not met as a team or functioned as a team for over 4 years come together and begin the process of looking at how they can improve their service and provide a more proficient and timely service to their patients.

Finally we would share the results that Nottingham University Hospitals have achieved in their 48 Theatres as a result of Clinicians being engaged and working with the wider Theatre team to focus on improving the number of operations undertaken in the planned theatre time available. This has resulted in a number of outcomes, improved insertion utilisation, an additional 1,000 cases in equivalent planned theatre time, with a Financial impact of 2.4 million. A 27% reduction in late starts equivalent of 810 hours per week with a value in theatre time of 655k per annum, a reduction in ‘on the day’ cancelled operations and no never events in Theatres since 2012. The case studies available show the shifts that can be achieved by gaining clinical engagement, but the opportunities seem to be endless when you have fully engaged teams working together to achieve mutually agreed goals to improve patient experiences and deliver great patient care.
