English commissioning bodies account for nearly a third of the total shortlist after a relatively quiet year in 2013, when the new commissioning structure was still in its infancy. Welsh organisations are also represented in three award categories.

The association said it had received its highest number of entries for its Working with Finance – Clinician of the Year Award since its introduction in 2009. A strong shortlist brings together three provider clinicians with a clinical commissioning group GP.

‘The HFMA has championed closer working between clinicians and finance professionals for years and the future-focused finance initiative’s close partnering work stream is again looking to push this agenda,’ said HFMA policy director Paul Briddock. ‘Against this backdrop, the Clinician of the Year Award is a great way of recognising and showcasing best practice and it is great to have increasing interest in the award and such a high-quality shortlist.’

Four finance directors will contest the prestigious Finance Director of the Year Award –
Alan Brace (Aneurin Bevan), Kathy Roe (NHS Tameside and Glossop), Mike Tate (NHS Wigan Borough) and Paul Havey (Lancashire Teaching Hospitals). Last year’s director award was shared by Bill Shields (Imperial) and Colin Martin (Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys).

In a big year for NHS costing, with developments on education and training costing and patient-level costing, five organisations have been included on the shortlist for the Costing Award.
