About this event

The NHS continues on a period of rapid change, one year on from the establishment of ICBs and the adoption of a 'system first' approach. This year has called for more innovation and collaboration across teams, with the pressure to deliver efficiencies whilst also demonstrating value added when shaping a system wide vision.

Returning for a second year, this face-to-face event encouraged delegates to interact with the content through Q&A and facilitated table discussions.

This session will begin by looking at how efficiency and productivity are defined within the context of the NHS, exploring the current drivers and barriers of productivity. This includes a look at cost drivers as well as hospital flow, clinical and workforce productivity.

May will outline the national picture on efficiency delivery, considering the focus on acute services in the short term and then looking more broadly at the medium and long term challenges and opportunities. She will also highlight the national efficiency programmes and support frameworks available to delegates.

The demand on NHS finance teams to provide detailed intelligence and analysis around financial information has led to departments handling an increasing volume of data. Value is found in providing the narrative for the data to support informed decision-making, rather than spending time processing the data.

In this session, Loie and Shakira will discuss how introducing SQL as part of the finance team’s toolkit at Blackpool is transforming the way that their teams work. Blackpool is one of the first organisations to share SQL skills across the department, having developed an in house training programme and training materials. They have since supported national SQL training initiatives and have used SQL to develop patient level cost benchmarking for Lancashire & South Cumbria ICS.

    Speakers
Loie McNeill   / Senior finance manager – costing & service improvement , Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS FT
Shakira Joynson   / Costing Accountant , Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS FT

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust have been introducing RPA as a way of saving time and cutting costs. They started by turning their attention to invoicing as an initial proof of concept and now have bots processing 10,000 invoices per month.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust have been introducing RPA as a way of saving time and cutting costs. They started by turning their attention to invoicing as an initial proof of concept and now have bots processing 10,000 invoices per month.

18 months on and the trust is seeing many tangible results, with RPA now also being adopted and embedded by the workforce team as well as clinical services in the community, being used to identify patient need and saving on wasted clinical visits.

Edd will join delegates today to outline their journey so far, how they were able to engage and educate staff as well as exploring what the future holds for their finance team as they look to incorporate and utilise an AI model to forecast.

Edd Berry   / Programme finance director , Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust

The EVO (Engagement Value Outcome) Framework is designed to support healthcare teams in making effective, value-based decisions for the purposes of transformation and measuring the impact that implementations have on a specialty/service.

By fostering collaboration between clinical and finance teams and bridging the divide between quality and cost improvement, this framework empowers these teams to make value-based decisions that prioritise the welfare of our patients.

In this snapshot session, Richard will provide some of the learnings from the pilot sites for EVO as well as an overview of the next steps for the programme.

Richard Sawyer   / Programme manager , One NHS Finance
