News / Value takes centre stage
HFMA President Tony Whitfield took his ‘Knowing the business’ message to the US last month, addressing the HFMA US annual national institute. The conference, this year held in Florida, attracted about 5,000 delegates over four days. Mr Whitfield told the conference that understanding how healthcare was delivered on the frontline was key to finance professionals helping to deliver good outcomes for patients in a financially sustainable way. Don Berwick (inset left), founding chief executive of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and now leading NHS work on harm reduction, told the conference that finance professionals had a major part to play in redesigning services to meet the triple aim of better care, improved health and lower cost. ‘You’re about to move right now from the engine room to the wheel house,’ he said. ‘Whether you want to or not, you’re going to be pilots.’
