Obituary: David Young

david young

Retired HFMA Northern Branch member David Young sadly passed away on 20 January after a short illness, writes Lynn Hartley

A popular and valued colleague, he supported the HFMA Northern Branch committee and led finance skills development across the North East for more than a decade.

His long NHS career took him from apprentice to deputy director of finance, before he became skills development network manager in August 2003. He held that role for 12 years, applying his varied experience to supporting staff at all levels.

Having left school with few qualifications, Mr Young was exceptionally proud of the accountancy and chartered secretary qualifications he gained over the years, enthusiastically drawing up T-Accounts in any situation. His career advice, freely given, was to work for what you want; to share your doubts and fears with those you trust, your mentors; and to build and use your networks.

In 2016, he received an honorary fellowship from the HFMA (pictured above) for his work with the association and in bringing the HFMA and FSD closer together. He will be much missed across the North East.

Lynn Hartley is skills development manager for North East and Cumbria
