Improving value is a high priority in the NHS faced with delivering more each year within limited resources. This course will address important issues affecting contemporary healthcare systems in relation to value. These include variation in access to services and the associated quality, cost and outcomes; overuse which results in waste i.e. anything that does not add value to the outcome for patients; and underuse, especially on harnessing the potential of technology. In a climate where there is a rising need and demand for healthcare with no additional resources, the focus must be on delivering better value for individuals and populations.
This course will explore issues raised by health economics, the allocations process and patient-level cost and outcome data. It will help you understand how the NHS, using scarce resources, can improve the quality of care to sustainably deliver the best possible outcomes for patients. The important role of the board in driving this change and in balancing competing priorities and seeking better value in healthcare will be explored.
The HFMA advanced qualifications are relevant to individuals aspiring to develop senior strategic and leadership skills who are currently working in clinical/medical, finance, managerial and operational roles. They are also highly relevant to individuals working for commercial companies serving the NHS.
