Catherine.Phillips2 small portraitCatherine Phillips (pictured) has been appointed executive director of finance at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. Ms Phillips, the HFMA Finance Director of the Year in 2020, was previously director of finance at North Bristol NHS Trust and succeeds Bob Chadwick, who retired last year. Cardiff and Vale’s deputy director of finance Chris Lewis has held the post in an interim capacity. Glyn Howells is now chief financial officer at North Bristol NHS Trust. He was previously the trust’s director of operational finance.

Terry.Whittle small portraitTerry Whittle (pictured) has joined Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as director of finance. He was previously director of financial performance at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, with responsibility for Barnet Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital and for group clinical services. An alumnus of the NHS graduate training programme, he has held senior roles at regional and national level, and is a member of the HFMA Policy and Research Committee. Mr Whittle succeeds Mike Keech, who is now chief financial officer at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  

Hayley.Wardle small portrait 2Hayley Wardle (pictured) has been appointed executive director of finance at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. She joined the trust in May 2020 as deputy director of finance and has held a number of senior posts at national level at NHS England and NHS Improvement. She will take up the role on 1 April 2021 following the retirement of Julia Pattison.

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust has appointed Steve Hackett director of finance. He is currently executive director of finance and performance at Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, though he has previously covered the role at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust on a part-time, interim basis. He has worked in the NHS since 1990, working at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, NHS England and primary care trusts.

Eric.Gardiner small portraitEric Gardiner (pictured) is to take up the position of director of finance, performance and estates at North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust from 1 April. It is his first executive position, and he moves from Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, where he was finance director – provider services. Mr Gardiner has more than 20 years’ experience working in the NHS. He succeeds Lorraine Hooper, who has been appointed executive director of finance, information and estates at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

Roshan Patel has joined Southampton City Clinical Commissioning Group as chief finance officer. He has also been appointed chief finance officer for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care System. He was previously the interim chief operating officer for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Partnership of CCGs and before that the partnership’s director of finance.

North Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust have taken a further step towards integration with the appointment of joint board and leadership teams. Joining chief executive and former HFMA president Suzanne Tracey, who became chief executive of both trusts in 2018, is Chris Tidman, formerly the Royal Devon’s chief finance officer. He has been appointed deputy chief executive. As well as deputising for the chief executive, he will take on responsibility for estates, programmes, strategy and partnerships, and communications and engagement. Angela Hibbard (pictured), who was previously director of finance, performance and facilities at the North Devon trust, has been appointed chief finance officer. She will be responsible for strategic finance management and planning across Northern and Eastern Devon, as well as leading the teams across both sites. The trusts aim to become a single organisation from April 2022.
