HFMA president Tony Whitfield has been appointed director of finance at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Mr Whitfield, currently executive director of finance and deputy chief executive of Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, is expected to start the job in the new year.

He has been at Salford since 2003.

Welcoming his appointment, Linda Pollard, chair of Leeds Teaching Hospitals, said: ‘I am delighted that we have been able to secure the services of Tony, who has a first-class track record in working to deliver effective patient services, efficiently and to the highest standards.

‘Salford Royal has been named one of the top performing hospitals in the country for the fourth year, and Tony’s leadership in building a strong and stable financial platform has been a key part of that success.’

Julian Hartley, the Leeds trust’s new chief executive, added: ‘Tony is a well-known and well-liked finance director with one of the best reputations in the NHS. He will be a great addition to our executive team and I am greatly looking forward to working with him.’

Mr Whitfield succeeds Neil Chapman, who has taken a new role with the NHS Trust Development Authority.
