Michael Brodie

Michael Brodie, Finance and Commercial Director, Public Health England

Michael was appointed as Finance and Commercial Director for PHE on its inception in 2013 and has responsibility for its finance, procurement, ICT, estates, business development and digital functions.  Michael has subsequently overseen the delivery of more than £150m of recurrent efficiency savings in addition to the generation of £175m commercial income annually, meaning that the net operating budget for PHE for its national public health infrastructure is less than £300m.  Including Vaccines and Countermeasures programmes and public health grants to local authorities Michael is responsible for over £4bn of public expenditure.

As well as responsibility for the broad portfolio of corporate services, Michael is the Executive Champion for both Disability and Social Mobility and is passionate about making PHE a great place to work.

Before joining PHE, Michael was Finance Director for the NHS Business Services Authority and has held senior finance positions in local government and the police service.

Michael acts as a shareholder (government) representative on the Board of Porton Biopharma Ltd, is Chair of the Audit Committee of the disability charity Scope and is an elected member of Council for the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA).  Additionally, he has been selected to serve as a member of the Oversight Board and Chair of the Audit Committee for the National Infrastructure Commission. All of these additional roles are unremunerated. 

Michael is a former winner of the "Future Leaders" award organised by Public Finance magazine and in 2013 he won Finance Director of the Year at the cross sector North East Accountancy Awards.
