Event / Value masterclass 2022
About this event
This event was designed for senior NHS finance and healthcare professionals and provided delegates with the know-how to begin applying value in practice.
Health services across the UK have the shared goal of ensuring the NHS is providing the best possible and most appropriate care at the lowest cost. The value masterclass shared examples of organisations and systems that have pursued a value-driven approach and the results they have achieved.
Session content
Kavita will give an overview of what we mean by value-based healthcare and why it is one of the most important topics in healthcare transformation today. Kavita recently attended the Harvard Business School Value-based Healthcare course and will share her insights on areas where a value driven approach is working well in the UK and where applying the theory of value has the potential to significantly improve healthcare delivery.
There is increasing interest and belief in applying quality improvement to help solve our most complex challenges in healthcare. This session will share details of a framework developed by East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) to help identify, understand and evaluate return on investment from large-scale application of QI in healthcare providers. The session presents examples from ELFT to illustrate return on investment from QI at multiple levels including improving outcomes for patients and service users, improving the experience of staff, improving productivity and reducing costs.
In this session Claire and Julia will share details of a project in Wales to collate numerous nationally held data sets to assess how the current diabetes pathway (including preventative services) impact on the health outcomes of the population across the pathway. This work seeks to use innovative analytical insight on existing data sets to explore how outcomes could be improved by more effective use of resources across a whole pathway.
The NHS is moving to a system led approach with Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) all starting to make changes in how they deliver health and social care to their population. It is fundamental that system-level decisions involve a mixed team of providers, commissioners and local authority representatives. The discussions also need to consider the possible outcomes of their intended decision before it is made. The STAR (Socio-Technical Allocation of Resources) analysis is a tool that supports system decision makers to prioritise how resources are allocated. In this session Andi will give an overview of the STAR approach then Jack and Su will share details of a project to work through a decision using STAR.
This session will draw on the learning from the day and consider what is needed to apply the theory of value in practice. The panel members will discuss how taking a value-driven approach can support key NHS challenges including addressing the elective backlog, improving financial sustainability and addressing health inequalities.
