Event / Costing revolution summit 2021
About this event
This new event supersedes the Technical Costing Update. The updated event focused primarily on the use of costing information and the importance of working with others to turn data into business intelligence. Through a series of plenary sessions and panel discussion, the event supported practitioners to collaborate with finance and non-finance colleagues to improve the quality and use of patient-level data to support decision making and improve service delivery.
The summit primarily supports those working in costing but is also relevant for any healthcare professionals interested in working with others to use and improve data to enhance the delivery of care.
Session content
Catherine gives a short introduction to the Institute’s Costing Revolution work stream and shares a few details on the Institute’s work in this area.
The costing team at Leeds is recognised as one of the best in the country and is now working with many different parts of the organisation using patient-level cost and activity data to inform decision making and improve service delivery. As part of the work, they have produced a series of tools which share vital business intelligence specific to particular services. Vinod and Thomas will take us through how the costing team at Leeds has developed, the lessons they have learned along the way as well as demonstrating one of their analyser tools.
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust has recently recruited a clinical coding specialist and a data analyst to improve engagement with the clinical world, the quality of data and how the data is used. Gareth and Marc will give a brief overview of their previous roles and how they have worked with the costing team in the past and then share details of the work they are planning now that they are an integral part of the costing team.
In this session Petra will share details about the costing journey at Barking, Havering and Redbridge, the challenges they have faced during the pandemic and their plans to work more collaboratively with other organisations in their area to improve system working.
In 2019, the Institute and Future-Focused Finance developed the EVO pilot project. EVO promotes collaborative working between clinical and finance teams and their collective understanding of patient-level data to ensure resources are used in the most effective way. EVO was piloted with four trusts, covering acute, mental health and community services over a period of 6 months. Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust was one of the pilot sites and will talk about their experience, the impact of the project and what has happened since.
