In February 2014, the six heads of the finance profession in the NHS came together to form the Finance Leadership Council (FLC) and to initiate Future-Focused Finance. The FLC sponsors the Future-Focused Finance programme, and forms its steering group who meet on a monthly basis. The FLC members are:

Bob Alexander Executive Director of Resources/Deputy Chief Executive, NHS Improvement

Paul Baumann Chief Financial Officer, NHS England
Steve Clarke Finance Director, Health Education England
Mark Orchard Director of Finance, Pool Hospital NHS FT & HFMA President
David Williams Director General, Strategy, Finance and NHS, Department of Health

Future-Focused Finance is about ‘Making People Count’ by ensuring that everyone connected with NHS finance has access to the relevant skills, methods and opportunities to influence decision making in support of the provision of high-quality patient services. It offers a vision for NHS finance to aspire to over the next five years. That includes everyone who works in finance, in every role at every level, those we work with to deliver services and the patients and communities that use and support those services.

To deliver the transformation required to bring about the vision, work is being undertaken around three strategic themes: Securing Excellence, Knowing the Business and Fulfilling Our Potential. Each strategic theme supports two action areas which have their own programme of projects. The six action areas are led by a senior responsible officer (SRO) drawn from the service. These are:

Securing Excellence

Best Possible Value - Caroline Clarke, Director of Finance / Deputy Chief Executive, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust
Efficient Processes & Systems - Adrian Snarr, Director of Financial Control, NHS England
Knowing The Business

Close Partnering - Dr Akeeban Maheswaran, Consultant Anaesthetist, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
Skills & Strengths - Richard Alexander, Finance Director, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
Fullfilling Our Potential

Great Place to Work - Loretta Outhwaite, Chief Finance Officer, Isle of Wight CCG
Value Makers - Claire Yarwood, Director of Finance, Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

More details on each of the action areas can be found on the FFF website.

Since launching, we have been working closely with FSD and HFMA to ensure we gain from the existing networks and experience in steering the strategic direction of the FFF programme. In March 2015 we established a Foundation, to secure the aims and objectives of FFF into the longer-term, with HFMA and the FSD network as founding partners. We have also signed an agreement with HFMA to be the prime strategic partner for the programme. In its role as prime partner, it contributes resources to FFF in the form of secretariat support to the FLC and the Foundation and provides the hosting arrangements for FFF budgets and contracting.
