Briefing / Exploring how patient-level cost and activity data can inform pathway redesign in mental health

All mental health services are required to submit their cost data at patient-level under the National cost collection, but using the data to support improvement in patient care and efficiency is at an early stage for many organisations.

This case study describes how the costing team at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust are starting to use their patient-level cost and activity data with clinical services to gain a better understanding of variation in clinical practice.

Through a joint iterative process between the costing team and the service managers, an expanded set of metrics for the older adult Intensive Recovery Intervention Service  has been identified, which has provided a very different perspective on team efficiency.
