As Wales celebrates 70 years of the National Health Service, founded by the Tredegar-born health minister Aneurin Bevan, the HFMA reflects on the journey so far and what the future might hold.

Devolved responsibility for NHS Wales, an ageing population and advancements in technology have all had a significant impact from 1948 to today. As the NHS in Wales develops so too does the role of the finance function, with recent examples of innovation which should be celebrated. Finance staff clearly have a critical role to play in supporting the ambition in Wales of a seamless whole system approach to health and social care.

This briefing reflects on what has changed for the NHS in Wales since its inception 70 years ago; reviews some of the advancements and challenges faced; and explores how this might inform the direction of travel for the NHS policy framework in Wales and the role of NHS finance.
