HFMA Accounting Apprenticeships

Healthcare accounting apprenticeships

The HFMA offers level 3 and 4 apprenticeships in accounting, enhanced with healthcare content, specifically for the NHS. Our apprenticeships are available to any permanent member of staff, whether this be existing employees or new recruits. Lasting typically 18-24 months, our apprenticeships can be tailored to support learners career progression.

What healthcare content is included in the programme?

The HFMA’s apprenticeship offering is uniquely designed with specific content for the NHS and healthcare sector. As well as gaining a professional qualification with an accountancy body, apprentices will complete assignments that embed an understanding of healthcare business and finance.

The programme includes learning content topics from HFMA’s level 4 certificate 'How finance works in the NHS' which covers areas such as how the NHS is funded and structured; politics and government policy in the NHS; commissioning; contracts and payments; financial planning, and integration and healthcare.

Is an apprenticeship right for you?

"I had been working for my organisation for over five years when I decided to do an accountancy apprenticeship. With all the years of experience I had in NHS finance, I considered myself trained by experience, however I didn't have any formal qualifications. I saw an apprenticeship as a way to gain an accounting qualification, whilst still earning and to develop new skills and knowledge. It also meant I didn't have to study in my own time as I was given full training support on and off the job. The other big draw for me was that the apprenticeship was funded directly through the levy which helped me get the funding through my organisation."

"Having joined the NHS through an accountancy apprenticeship programme, I’ve had first-hand experience of how this entry route into the world of work brings a variety of benefits and opportunities. After completing a year of sixth form I decided that college wasn’t right for me anymore, so I applied for an apprenticeship. I joined my organisation’s finance team as an Assistant Accountant level 3 apprentice and gained on-the-job experience in the sector alongside an accountancy qualification, whilst being paid. 18 months after starting, I completed my apprenticeship and was offered a permanent role within the team."
