The history of HFMA
The HFMA can trace its roots back to 1950, two years after the NHS was established. Concerned that financial management would be subsumed into the administration function, the Association’s founding fathers were determined that professional accountants should play a key role in the NHS. They needed a forum for influence and debate and so the Association of Chief Financial Officers in the Hospital Service in England and Wales was born.
A commemorative booklet was produced for our 60th birthday detailing the history of the Association.
