Mentoring

Our free mentoring service is available to all full HFMA members, and individuals from ONF level 1 accredited organisations.

In partnership with One NHS Finance, we are pleased to offer a complimentary mentoring service to all full HFMA members, including bands 2 to 6 members and individuals employed by organisations holding a minimum of ONF Level 1 accreditation. Colleagues within these accredited organisations can access free mentoring, regardless of their HFMA membership status.

What you need to know about mentoring?

Mentoring is a collaborative relationship between an individual and a more experienced colleague or peer. Its primary aim is to provide support for the individual's knowledge, skill development, personal growth, and career advancement. A mentor is a more experienced peer who is happy to share their knowledge of healthcare finance to support you.

We are seeking individuals with the skills, experience, and a genuine interest in guiding and supporting others on their journey to success. The job description of the mentor role can be found here and the application form here. Successful applicants to the programme will be invited to attend an online training programme to ensure they’re well-equipped for the role.

Mentoring can benefit a wide range of professionals, but it is particularly valuable for emerging leaders, managers, or project leads. If this describes you, or if you're interested in advancing your career, mentoring could be the right choice for you.

Mentoring is valuable in many situations. A mentor can:

  • Help you identify the skills and expertise you need to succeed.
  • Enhance your effectiveness and prevent you from "reinventing the wheel."
  • Provide valuable insights into the path to leadership and progress.
  • Serve as a guide and sounding board for your ideas.
  • Assist you in developing a career plan and considering how to advance in your field.

We begin by collecting information about your current role, past experiences, and your organisation. We will also request you to select your three preferred mentors from our pool. Once you've chosen the mentor you believe is the best fit for you, we'll connect you, and your mentoring relationship can begin.

Ultimately, you determine what you want from the mentoring relationship. It's essential to note that all our mentors are highly trained and have extensive experience in healthcare finance. They can offer a wide range of advice, guidance, insights, and support.

Mentoring sessions primarily take place online, but you can decide with your mentor to meet in person if that is your preference.
