London SHA FSD Technical Programme 2009/10
Welcome to the London FSD Technical Skills Programme for 2009/10. The programme is targeted at finance staff working in SHAs, Trusts and PCTs across London and is offered at no charge to delegates. Courses are aimed at finance staff and managers at different stages of their careers and with varying levels of knowledge and experience. The programme complements the Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF) and can help develop both the core skills and the finance specific technical skills. Each course description (below) outlines the KSF dimension and level it supports, where appropriate. Further information about the KSF can be found on the FSD website at

Managing a Cost Improvement Programme

A half day/morning workshop to be delivered by HFMA
The morning session will address cost improvements and increased efficiency/productivity, which will be a real challenge for all NHS organisations currently and in future years with significantly reduced growth which have prevailed for many years, along with the 3.5% CRES requirement. This session will also focus on a structured approach to cost improvement to ensure measures are followed through and benefits realised.
The content will cover the following:
· Establishing a programme structure
· Making sure you get the right people
· Getting the ground rules agreed
· Avoiding reinvestment of savings and ensuring cash release
· Use of temporary financial controls
· Monitoring tools and savings targets
· Income optimisation – both clinical and non clinical

Service Re-Design/Re-Engineering
27th January 2010
A half day/afternoon workshop to be delivered by HFMA
The afternoon session will focus on achieving improved length of stay and will feature a case study on the redesign of a fractured neck of the femur pathway. Several steps will be covered to include: process overview, identifying best practice, closing the performance gap, engaging clinicians, unblocking the system, measuring the results, realising the benefits and summary of the key lessons. These principles can then be applied to any care pathway.

Course Aims: To provide delegates with an understanding of World Class Commissioning and an update on the progress that is being made in each of the key elements of the WCC programme. The workshop will use practical case studies to examine the benefits of WCC and the key challenges for NHS finance professionals.

A one day programme to be delivered by CIMA.
The course will describe best-practice forecasting and budgeting techniques and give participants the opportunity to understand what is required of them and to clarify what they require of the budget so that it becomes an invaluable management tool for the whole organisation.
