Our President - Tony Whitfield
Tony has been a Finance Director in the NHS for twenty years. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, and holds an MA in financial management.
Joining the NHS in 1983, his career has been predominately based in the acute hospital sector. Tony has been the Director of Finance/ Deputy CEO at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust since 2003. Salford Royal has a turnover of over £400m and provides care, teaching and research across a wide domain of local and national services. Salford Royal is a recognised national leader for its emphasis on safety and quality, across its service offer from local community based services to its specific expertise as a national centre in other areas of its work. Tony's role extends beyond the responsibilities of a traditional finance director and he has executive responsibility for neurosciences and renal services within the Trust.
Tony has a keen interest in creating the bridges between clinical and managerial aspirations. He believes that safety and quality should be the organising principles of NHS organisations and that finance teams can make an important contribution by having a thorough understanding of how services co-exist and the financing that makes this possible.
He is currently President of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). He is passionate about the development NHS finance staff and utilising their skills to improve the services delivered to patients. He is also Chairman of the HFMA Strategic Costing Committee.
