London SHA FSD Technical Programme 2008/9
Welcome to the London FSD Technical Skills Programme for 2008/9. The programme is targeted at finance staff working in SHAs, Trusts and PCTs across London and is offered at no charge to delegates. Courses are aimed at finance staff and managers at different stages of their careers and with varying levels of knowledge and experience. The programme complements the Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF) and can help develop both the core skills and the finance specific technical skills. Each course description (below) outlines the KSF dimension and level it supports, where appropriate. Further information about the KSF can be found on the FSD website at ww.fsdnetwork.com

Courses 2008/9:
Introduction to NHS Finance - FULLY BOOKED
November 20th 2008, Hellenic Centre, London
This one-day programme will be delivered by HFMA and is aimed at finance staff, with between two months and one year’s experience in the NHS, who would benefit from gaining an overview of the finance function and its role within the NHS. It will also be beneficial to finance staff who would like to be updated on key areas of finance.
Course Aims: To provide delegates with an understanding of:
- NHS finance terminology
- How the NHS is financed
- Key funding issues and how funds flow through the NHS
- Payment by Results
- Practice Based Commissioning
- The importance of good governance
This programme is likely to assist participants in reaching KSF dimensions G3, G4, G5, C4, C5 level 1
IFRS
January 22nd 2009
A one day programme to be delivered by CIMA. The course aims to enable appreciation of the accounting system soon to be required for most of the public sector.
Course Aims: To provide delegates with an understanding and appreciation of:
- The IFRS context
- The differences between UK and international standards and an awareness of US/IFRS differences
- An update on changes to IFRS in the coming year and forthcoming changes
- Preparing for the transition
This course is designed for those with a working knowledge of UK accounting rules. It is particularly relevant to financial accountants wanting to clarify their understanding of IFRS, auditors and management accountants and other managers who wish to keep up to date

Forecasting Techniques
June 25th 2009
A one day programme to be delivered by CIMA.
The course will describe best-practice forecasting and budgeting techniques and give participants the opportunity to understand what is required of them and to clarify what they require of the budget so that it becomes an invaluable management tool for the whole organisation.
The course looks not only at budgeting itself but also at the way that other factors operate and relate to it. Delegates will be given the opportunity to examine a variety of effective and easily applied forecasting techniques.
Course Aims: To provide delegates with:
- A thorough appreciation of the purpose and techniques of planning, forecasting and budgeting
- A clear understanding of best practice techniques

Commercial Skills – The Commercial Mindset

A one day course to be delivered by CIMA. The programme is aimed at all NHS finance staff who are faced with the newly commercial focus of operating within the NHS.
Course Aims: To provide delegates with:
- An understanding of human behaviour and interaction and its consequences in the mindsets we have for our working environment
- An appreciation of “old world” and “new world” attitudes in areas such as financial reporting, reporting potential bad news and creating financial surpluses
- The ability to consider risk in a commercial format
- An appreciation of the wider consequences of actions, leading to virtuous cycles and detrimental cycles
- An appreciation of “the intelligent board”, operating as a commercial board would do
- The opportunity to “bring a problem” and use the wisdom of the other delegates and the tutor, using the frameworks and concepts of the day, to apply them to real issues
