GP Finance
The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) is the representative body for finance staff in the NHS. We have supported the healthcare finance function for 60 years providing amongst other things quality training and technical support for those involved with the management of NHS resources.
HFMA has developed a range of briefings specifically for GPs, Practice Managers and non-finance staff involved in the transition of commissioning responsibility to clinical commissioning groups. Finance and accountability for GP consortia was the first briefing, its purpose being to assist with the development of knowledge required to carry out the financial responsibilities associated with changing roles. This first briefing provides a handy summary covering key information around NHS financial flows and key information on how we expect the commissioning groups to work from a financial perspective.
The second briefing focuses on budgets, budget monitoring and control which play a key role in ensuring the financial health of any organisation.
A third GP briefing builds on the knowledge from the first and second briefings and focuses on Payment by results for GP consortia.
The fourth briefing explains the importance of good governance, and focuses on tried and tested tools that clinical commissioning groups may find helpful as they establish their new roles and responsibilities.
HFMA’s fifth GP briefing is designed to help clinical commissioning groups prepare for the challenges ahead in relation to commissioning support services.
HFMA has also developed the ‘Introductory Certificate in Healthcare Finance in England for General Practice’. Participants will be required to successfully complete five e-learning modules. The training will provide a basic understanding and awareness of fundamental aspects of NHS Finance and help develop the business skills needed to carry out the financial responsibilities associated with evolving roles. Click here to view information about the GP modules. The certificate includes up to eight hours of CPD, and is accompanied by our ‘Introductory Guide to NHS Finance in the UK’. The certificate package is open to anyone who is interested to learn more about NHS Finance and is priced at £110 +VAT as an exclusive offer until the 31st March 2012 (normally £165+VAT). Additional modules (over and above the five needed to complete the certificate) are available at a reduced price of £25+VAT. Individual modules are available at £50+VAT.
