Finance Director of the Year heads HFMA Awards winners
Paul Hinnigan, deputy chief executive and director of finance and information at NHS Blackburn with Darwen Primary Care Trust, was named Finance Director of the Year at last night’s Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) Awards 2009. The awards recognise achievement in heath service management with a particular focus on finance.
Mr Hinnigan was one of seven winners at the awards ceremony, held during the HFMA's annual conference in central London. The award acknowledged his long record of financial achievement and his reputation for accuracy and approachability.
Mr Hinnigan has been finance director at the PCT since it was established nine years ago and under his stewardship it has met all its finance targets. He becomes the third recipient of the award, which was launched in 2007. Judges were impressed by the trust fellow board members showed in him, together with his commitment to serving local people through his work in the wider health economy.
At the ceremony, seven awards in total were made to organisations, teams and individuals, recognising achievements in financial reporting, efficiency, charitable funds management and governance. The HFMA also honoured its Clinician of the Year – Dr Ellen Wilkinson of Cornwall Partnership NHS Trust – who had taken a leading role in her trust’s financial management and engaging fellow clinicians in finding savings.
HFMA chairman Bill Shields, who sat on a number of judging panels and presented the awards, said the HFMA Awards were an opportunity to ‘celebrate excellence in finance departments' and showcase best practice.
‘Efficiency, productivity and innovation, built on a solid base of good governance, will be the key to success and examples of best practice should be shared as widely as possible,’ he added.
The HFMA awards have been running since 2004 and are the most comprehensive awards programme for healthcare financial management and governance. In total, 21 organisations and individuals were shortlisted for the seven awards.
